The Tree of Life
« To take care of babies, their growth and their psychic maturity, opens a whole field which goes well
beyond the only technical and theory-clinical aspects. It's an action field which confronts us with the very
roots of the process of humanisation and with all the enigmas which are attached to it.
"Baby is a person" or rather a person in becoming and for this reason it is entitled to our respect.
Let us not parcel it out, let us not split it up in a mosaic of scattered competences put out of grids or ladders.
The ethics of the baby psychiatry has to take into account its unity and its singularity, were they to come
from the point of view of its life experience. The double anchoring hypothesis -body and interactive- of its
psyché development, seems to be the best guarantee of this unitary and basically unifying conception
of the baby. Of this baby, that is to say, of this particular object which remains indefinitely in us as a strongly
invested object of all our narcissism and in particular of all our professional narcissism ».
